Maius: a name rooted in Priorat

by | Jul 8, 2025

Since Maius’ inception, the reason for the name of our organic wine has been a recurring question. Beyond a simple question of identity and marketing, the main reason for choosing it is its connection to the Priorat region.

Linked to Priorat since the 13th century

La Cartoixa d’Escaladei was founded in 1194, the first Carthusian monastery on the Iberian Peninsula. It is located in the present-day municipality of La Morera de Montsant. Its main cloister, the Cloister Maius, was built in the early 13th century as a central space around which the monastic life of the monks who lived there took place. Later, with the general renovation of La Cartoixa, the Cloister Maius was remodeled in the Classicist style.

Latin etymology

Latin was the primary language of the Carthusian order, used for their liturgical activities and writings. In Latin, Maius has a broad meaning, referring to the fifth month of the year, May, and to the comparative term “greater than.”
